This week AI crossed a billion-user milestone, Google dropped a smarter model at half the old price, Indian businesses are starting to move from AI experiments to real workflows, and Europe’s rulebook came into full force — with real consequences for Indian tech. Here’s your digest.

ChatGPT Crosses 1 Billion Weekly Users
OpenAI confirmed this week that ChatGPT now serves over 1 billion weekly active users — up from 400 million just a year ago. That’s more than 1 in 8 people on the planet using the tool every week. OpenAI also counts 2 million-plus businesses on its platform, and reached $25B in annualised revenue.
|
India contributes a large slice of this number — but most Indian usage is still casual: students, freelancers, quick drafts. For business owners and managers, the 1-billion mark signals something important: this tool is no longer experimental. The question now is who’s using it professionally to cut costs and move faster — and who’s still watching from the sideline.

Google Gemini 3.7 Flash: Smarter Coding at Half the Old Price
Google launched Gemini 3.7 Flash on 13 August, billing it as its best model yet for coding and agentic workflows. It features a 1-million-token context window and a 16-point jump on software engineering benchmarks over the previous version. Introductory pricing is $0.75 per million input tokens — roughly half what Gemini 3.6 Flash cost — but this rate expires 31 December 2026.
|
For Indian IT teams and product builders, this is worth testing now — the discount window closes on 31 December, so there’s a genuine incentive to build and validate workflows at low cost before prices double. The 1-million-token context is especially useful for large codebases, lengthy legal documents, and multi-step business process automation common in Indian enterprise contexts.

2026: Enterprise AI Moves From Pilot to Production
Industry analysts confirm 2026 as the inflection year for enterprise AI: 60% of global CIOs plan to invest in agentic AI over the next 12 months, and 53% expect it to disrupt their business model within two years. AI agents are now completing end-to-end workflows in HR, finance, IT, and operations — not just answering questions, but taking actions and handing off tasks autonomously.
|
For Indian businesses, this shift is the most consequential trend of 2026 — and it cuts both ways. Competitors who deploy AI in even one core workflow will operate at meaningfully lower costs by year-end. The businesses seeing real ROI aren’t necessarily using the fanciest AI — they picked one repetitive process, automated it properly, and moved on to the next. That’s the playbook.

Maharashtra Bets ₹10,000 Crore on AI — 1.5 Lakh Jobs by 2031
Maharashtra’s Cabinet cleared its AI Policy 2026 this week, targeting ₹10,000 crore in investment and 1.5 lakh new jobs by 2031. The policy includes a ₹500 crore AI Startup Venture Fund, 12 incubators across the state, 2,000 public GPUs, and six Centres of Excellence covering healthcare, agriculture, education, urban development, Marathi language AI, and finance. A scheme to train two lakh youth and professionals is also planned.
|
Maharashtra joining Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu in the state AI policy race signals that India’s AI investment competition is intensifying at the state level. For startups, the ₹500 crore venture fund and 12 incubators are worth tracking closely. The Marathi language AI focus is also significant — regional language AI remains commercially underserved and represents a real business opportunity beyond the social mission.

EU AI Act Now Fully Enforceable — 1,200+ Indian Tech Firms in Scope
The EU AI Act reached its most consequential enforcement phase on 2 August, with full penalties now active for high-risk AI systems and general-purpose AI transparency rules. NASSCOM estimates over 1,200 Indian tech companies serving EU clients are in scope. Fines can reach 7% of global annual turnover or €35 million — whichever is higher. The law applies extraterritorially: if your AI tool is used by EU customers, you are liable.
|
The “Brussels effect” is real — this regulation will reshape how Indian IT exporters build and document AI products, even if they never set foot in Europe. HR tools, credit scoring software, and recruitment systems are especially exposed. Early movers who get compliant now will have a clear certification edge over competitors who scramble later. If you have EU clients and use AI in your product, it’s time to have the compliance conversation.

📚 Learning Bite — This Week
Your Data in AI Tools — What Actually Happens to It?
|
|
When you type into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini — where does that go?
| ● Free plans: Your conversations may be stored and used to train future AI models. Human reviewers can sometimes read them. |
| ● Paid / enterprise plans: Most providers offer “no training” agreements — your data is not used to improve their models. This is usually opt-in or automatic on business plans. |
| ● Data retention: Even if not used for training, providers may retain your conversations for 30–90 days for safety and abuse monitoring. Check each provider’s privacy policy. |
| ● India’s legal position: The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 applies broadly, but there is no India-specific AI data law yet. For now, contractual data processing agreements with your AI provider are your best protection. |
| ● The golden rule: Never paste client contracts, employee salary data, financial records, or customer PII into a free AI tool. If you’re handling sensitive business information, use an enterprise plan with a signed Data Processing Agreement. |
|
💡 Quick test: Open your AI tool’s settings right now and look for “Data Controls” or “Privacy.” Check whether your conversations are being used for training — and turn it off if you’d rather they weren’t.
