One AI. Two very different futures.
A short, plain-English issue this week. Anthropic — the company behind the Claude AI — just published its regular safety report on how people try to misuse AI. Two findings stood out. They sound frightening, but the real lesson is simpler and more hopeful than the headlines suggest.
GLOBAL
The same power that helps us can be misused — here’s what Anthropic found
Anthropic’s security team studies how bad actors try to bend AI to harmful ends, then shuts those attempts down. This report covered activity from December 2025 to August 2026. Most of it was familiar — scams, hacking, propaganda. But two areas crossed a new line: people using AI to help build weapons, and to help with dangerous biology.
The story in four frames
Storyboard of the DronDoc case: 1. Freelancers, not an army. 2. The AI builds a swarm. 3. The line it crossed. 4. Caught and cut off.

What the two new findings were
⚠️ WEAPONS SOFTWARE
In six cases, people used AI to help write software for weapons and targeting systems. In the most alarming, a group coded a drone swarm that could choose human targets and strike on its own — no person in the loop.
🧬 DANGEROUS BIOLOGY
For the first time, Anthropic said it can no longer assume its newest models are safely below the line for meaningful help with bioweapons. In one case, the AI drafted a complete virus-research funding application in about an hour.
✓ The good news: every single case here was caught, shut down, and reported to authorities. The company that makes the AI is also the one hunting for its misuse — and publishing what it finds so everyone can defend better.

OUR VIEW
The takeaway for India isn’t to fear AI — it’s to respect what it is. The very thing that lets a Kolkata student build an app over a weekend is what lets a bad actor skip years of training. As India bets big on AI for growth, the report is a reminder that safety, human oversight, and “keep a person in charge” rules aren’t red tape — they’re what keeps this remarkable tool firmly on the side of progress.
